Vanilla has the reputation of being boring.
Vanilla is also used as an adjective to describe sex.
Vanilla sex is considered to be the opposite of kinky sex. Two people having penetrative anal sex using a strap on would be considered kinky in a cisheteronormative context, whereas the same practice can be viewed as vanilla in a queer context. Therefore, if you look at a queer sex practice, not knowing what people are involved (if cisheterosexual or queer), you can’t say if it is vanilla or not.
