Who doesn’t like memes? 👻 Memes, often characterised by their humorous and viral nature, have become a ubiquitous form of online expression, shaping the way we engage with and understand contemporary issues. 📱 But beyond the laughs, memes can also serve as powerful tools for literacy, advocacy and activism with their unique ability to distil complex issues into easily digestible content, reach wide audiences and spark vital conversations.
At Feminist Design, we look into memes as an engaging and critical medium to recognize the unbalanced distribution of power, control, and knowledge over urban spaces; challenge the status quo and strive for feminist futures. 👀
Meme-tivism is to investigate the enormous potential of memes as a critical and feminist medium, utilizing a co-creation approach. By leveraging the visual and participatory nature of memes, we can challenge prevailing power structures and stimulate critical thinking in an accessible and engaging way. By tapping into the vernacular creativity of meme culture, we can ignite conversations, raise awareness, and galvanize communities in pursuit of equitable urban futures. The workshop will produce a collection of co-created memes that spark conversations around urban rights and justice.
